Rías Baixas, wines very identifiable

The Rías Baixas Designation of Origin falls fully within the Atlantic region.

The Atlantic climate, with high humidity and mild temperatures, as well as the granite soils, are characteristics of this region.  Around 99% of the wine produced here is white, and Albariño, representing 90% of the vines, is the undisputed king of this DO. It is believed that this variety was introduced in the 12th century by Cistercian monks from the Rhine region who founded the Monastery of Santa María de Almenteira. Other theories, however, maintain that this grape came via Portugal, where it arrived from Greece on English ships.

One of the exceptional characteristics of Albariño is that it maintains a rich acidity that very few varieties in the world achieve, together with a richness in aromatic and pleasant flavor components that make its wines very identifiable.
