Riesling is a highly acclaimed variety that produces some of the best dry and sweet whites in the world
Riesling is a white grape variety originally from Alsace, France, and characterized by small clusters of small grapes. It thrives on the sandy and rocky soil of Alsace, as well as on shale. This robust variety is very resilient to the cold winters in the region. That said, it is sensitive to high temperatures. It makes wines that are dry, extremely crisp, lively and fine. When properly grown and vinified, it is well suited to ageing for long periods. It can be harvested late in the season, though it is prone to noble rot (botrytis cinerea). Riesling sweet wines offer good acidity, which enables them to hold their own over time and retain their exquisite fresh taste.
