It contributes richness and structure to blends

Tannat is the mainstay of Madiran (60% of vineyards) and Saint Mont (70% of vineyards). It is originally from the Adour basin, but is also grown in the Irouléguy and Tursan areas. The grapes ripen very late in heavy, compact clusters. They are high in sugar, tannins (hence the name) and colour. Tannat was once used solely to make highly concentrated wines that required long periods of cellaring to develop, but recent advancements in growing and vinification techniques have allowed this variety to produce more supple, intensely fruity and well-balanced wines.
